Deshaun Watson is on the market and the asking price is high

Jul 26, 2021, 8:05 AM

After stating throughout the offseason that they weren’t interested in trading Deshaun Watson, the Texans have suddenly changed course. Now that the quarterback has reported for training camp, meaning that Houston won’t be able to avoid the millions they owe him, the team’s position has altered.

At the start of the offseason, the Broncos were one of the teams rumored to be interested in Watson. In fact, the quarterback had reportedly listed Denver among his top destinations.

That was before Watson found himself in a legal mess, however. He’s facing 22 lawsuits from massage therapists who are accusing him of misconduct.

For months, that put a halt to the Watson trade talks and rumors. Now that he’s reported for training camp, however, the topic has become front and center once again.

There are two big issues with any deal. The first is the legal situation, including what the NFL might do as a response, as a suspension could very well be the result. The second is compensation, as the 25-year-old quarterback is one of the best young signal callers in the league.

While no one knows for sure how the former will unfold, the latter is starting to become clear. The asking price is going to be steep.

While “high draft picks” and “starting caliber players” are loose terms, they start to paint the picture. The Texans appear to be seeking first- and second-round choices and/or players who are ready to step in and start right now.

Is that price too high? Only if no one is willing to pay it.

The Broncos have to consider whether or not they’re in the market. Watson would solve their five-year conundrum at quarterback, but he doesn’t come without risk and baggage.
