GAME 1: Marquez left high and dry by Rockies’ punchless offense

Rockies ace German Marquez gave his team every chance to win in Thursday’s opener, pitching six innings of one-run ball while allowing only three hits and striking out six. Unfortunately, Jose Peraza’s second-inning home run off of Marquez represented the game’s only run as the Rockies’ batting order mustered only three singles — one of them by Marquez, who at .176, holds a higher batting average than starting catcher Dom Nunez (.173).

GAME 2: Story leaves game with arm soreness as Rockies swept by Mets

Trevor Story, in what is almost certainly his final season with the Rockies, is also their biggest trade chip, so it was alarming to see manager Bud Black remove him from the game in the fourth inning with an apparent arm injury.

“His arm tightened up as the inning went on and when he got into the dugout he let (trainer) Keith (Duggar) know,” Black explained. “That progressed to the point where we’re going to be cautious.”

Starter Antonio Senzatela wasn’t sharp, allowing a pair of runs in four innings to fall to 1-5 on the season, but the Rockies’ mere five singles, one double and seven stranded runners didn’t do him any favors as the Rockies dropped their third straight to the Mets.

NOTES

• At 3-20 (.130) on the road, the Rockies are the National League’s worst road team. This weekend, they’ll visit Pittsburgh, who at 8-14 (.364), are the NL’s worst home team.

• Colorado scored a total of three runs in their last three games; unsurprisingly, they lost all of them and suffered their eighth shutout of the season in the process.

• The Rockies’ batting average with runners in scoring position this season is a disastrous .194 (28-for-144). The team’s inability to bring in runners and extend innings has resulted in uneven and generally ineffective production.

• Despite the doubleheader, only Ryan McMahon managed more than a single hit. McMahon went 2-for-7 (.286) with a stolen base in the twin bill.

• Trevor Story (arm tightness) was pulled from the second game of a doubleheader on May 27 and is considered day-to-day.
• Matt Adams (shin) joined Triple-A Albuquerque on a rehab assignment May 24. The Rockies hope he can be activated in early June.
• Ben Bowden (strained left shoulder) was placed one the 10-day IL on May 16.
• Chris Owings (left thumb surgery) was placed on the 60-day IL in mid-April and will likely be out until the All-Star break.
• Scott Oberg (blood clots) had surgery prior to the end of Spring Training. He was placed on the 60-day IL on Mar. 27 and his season is in doubt.
