Orlando Franklin is getting back into football.
Franklin announced on “Orlando and Sandy” that he will be joining the San Francisco 49ers in a coaching internship role during training camp this season.
In 2018, Franklin retired after seven seasons in the NFL, but said that something has been missing, which led to this decision.
“Something has been missing, I love football, I love the game of football and it’s been a big part of my life,” Franklin said. “That’s why I have accepted this coaching internship.”
During his announcement Franklin said a few other teams approached him with internship opportunities, but he ultimately decided on the 49ers.
The coaching internship will take place during San Francisco’s training camp as part of the diversity fellowship that Bill Walsh began in San Francisco in 1986.
“This is something that I have to do because I don’t want to live my life thinking ‘what if’ and not trying,” Franklin said.
Franklin will be gone during the Denver Broncos training camp this season, but will still continue to host his regular 9am – 12pm show with Sandy Clough after his internship is over.
“I want to say thank you to everyone at Bonneville … I love this job and I love talking on the radio each and every day,” Franklin said. “Coaching has been on my mind for the last three years and I have to try it.”
