Rocky Mountain Showdown extended 6 games through 2038

The Rocky Mountain Showdown rides on for at least another two decades.
Colorado State University and the University of Colorado have agreed to meet up six more times between 2029 and 2038, the schools announced on Tuesday.
“For both fan bases, this is a premiere game any time it’s on the schedule, and it was important to both Rick George and I to get this done,” said CSU athletic director Joe Parker in a statement. “It was also essential to get the Showdown back on campus. College football is best enjoyed in on-campus venues, and I’m thrilled we were able to get that done for fans of both teams for the foreseeable future.”
The Buffs and Rams will also meet up in two previously scheduled matchups, in Boulder in 2023 and in Fort Collins in 2024.
CU and CSU will play a two-on, two-off format, playing at each team’s home stadium three times with two off years between.
“This has been a great series for the state, and we wanted to be sure we had games locked in moving forward,” CU athletic director Rick George said in a release. ”The two-on, two-off format we’ve adopted provides both schools some flexibility to schedule other non-conference opponents in other parts of the country, which play a role in several factors, including alumni engagement and recruiting.
“We have some exciting series coming up this decade, but also felt it was prudent to secure CSU deep into the 2030s.”
The schedule is as follows:
• Sept. 16, 2023 – Boulder (Folsom Field)
• Sept. 14, 2024 – Fort Collins (Canvas Stadium)
• Sept. 15, 2029 – Fort Collins (Canvas Stadium)
• Sept. 14, 2030 – Boulder (Folsom Field)
• Sept. 17, 2033 – Boulder (Folsom Field)
• Sept. 16, 2034 – Fort Collins (Canvas Stadium)
• Sept. 19, 2037 – Boulder (Folsom Field)
• Sept. 11, 2038 – Fort Collins (Canvas Stadium)
The final game in the series in 2038, barring a postseason matchup, will constitute the 99th meeting between the two schools located within an hour of each other along the Front Range.
Colorado has won five straight games against CSU, leading the all-time series 67-22-2. The Buffaloes have played the Rams more than any other opponent in their history while CSU has played only one team more times — Wyoming.
Last season’s scheduled meeting, the final game of an 11-game contract starting in 2010, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic
