Avalanche bolster backup goalie situation, trade for Dubnyk

The Colorado Avalanche bolstered its backup goaltender situation Saturday, trading defenseman Greg Pateryn and a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for netminder Devan Dubnyk.

A 12-year NHL veteran, Dubnyk for a long stretch was considered among the top goalies in the league, compiling a 250-204-54 career record with a 2.60 goals-against average, .914 save percentage and 33 shutouts for five different teams.

Dubnyk has played the thorn in the Avalanche’s side in the past, earning a 19-16-1 record in 39 games against Colorado — the most played against any opponent in his career.

However, the past few seasons haven’t gone as well as likely hoped for Dubnyk, who sports a 3-9-2 record, 3.18 goals-against average and .898 save percentage with the San Jose Sharks this season.

The move comes just hours after Avs backup goaltender Jonas Johansson made 28 saves in his first career shutout for a 2-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night.

Johansson, who was just acquired by the Avalanche from the Buffalo Sabres in mid-March, has a 2-0-1 record in three games for Colorado, posting a .920 save percentage and 2.13 goals-against average.
