Avalanche acquire familiar face Nemeth from Red Wings

Apr 9, 2021, 7:17 PM

The Colorado Avalanche are bringing back a familiar face, as the club acquired defenseman Patrik Nemeth from the Detroit Red Wings on Friday in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Nemeth previously played for the Avs from 2017 to 2019, tallying 25 points (4 goals/21 assists) and a plus-32 rating in 142 games with Colorado.

The 29-year-old NHL veteran had been in his second season with the Red Wings before the trade, averaging 18:24 minutes of ice time — third among Detroit defensemen — while tallying eight points (2 goals/6 assists).

The move comes as Avs rookie defenseman Bo Byram was added to the league’s COVID protocol absence list Friday afternoon. Byram had missed the past seven games in the concussion protocol.

Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, Nemeth was a second-round draft pick of the Dallas Stars in 2010, spending his first four seasons in North America with the franchise. Before joining the NHL, Nemeth played four seasons in the Swedish Hockey League.

In 353 career NHL games for the Stars, Avalanche and Red Wings, Nemeth has accumulated 56 points (7 goals/49 assists). He has also appeared in 18 postseason contests, including 13 with Colorado.
