Leaving no stone unturned, Paton to attend Lance pro day

After talking the talk about any position being available to select at No. 9 overall in the upcoming NFL Draft, Denver Broncos general manager George Paton appears set to walk the walk.

On Thursday, NFL Network’s James Palmer reported Paton would be in Fargo, North Dakota, on Friday for the pro day of North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance.

Later Thursday, 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis said Denver would be sending a “small scouting/coaching contingent” to Fargo, which includes Paton, and it will be the first of several pro days in which the general manager and company will attend.

Speaking with the media last week, Paton said the club is open to any position with the No. 9 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft — including quarterback.

“Quarterback, safety — it doesn’t matter what player and what position,” Paton said. “If it’s the best player on the board, we’re going to take him.”

Lance, who currently sits 12th on ESPN.com’s best available prospects list, played just one full season for the Bison in his three-year tenure at NDSU after the 2020 campaign was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his second year in 2019, Lance started 16 games, completing 66.9 percent of his passes for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns with zero interceptions.

In Todd McShay’s latest mock, Lance landed with the Atlanta Falcons at No. 4 overall after fellow quarterback prospects Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson and Justin Fields went one-two-three to the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets and Carolina Panthers.
