Broncos’ Paton and Fangio hint at new competition at QB for Lock

Mar 4, 2021, 3:45 PM

On Thursday, Broncos general manager George Paton and head coach Vic Fangio spoke about Drew Lock and their quarterback situation. While both were complimentary of Lock, neither shied away at the idea of bringing in competition for him.

“I’ve spoken with Drew, I see him every day. He’s here early, he’s working. He really wants to be great,” said Paton. “We’re always going to try and bring in competition at every position, at quarterback as well. I like the trek that Drew is on.”

Paton reiterated his past comments that Lock has been “inconsistent at times” and “has a lot to work on.” However, the general manager also called the passer “very talented” and said he “does have all of the traits you look for in a quarterback.”

Fangio, who has gone 8-10 in games with Lock as his starter, was optimistic about the quarterback’s potential, but reinforced Paton’s thoughts on competition.

“I’m confident that Drew’s going to continue to improve. Drew has had a great offseason up to this point,” said Fangio. “We’re always looking to bring in players at all positions that can raise the level of competition, and the quarterback is no different in that regard. Until Drew proves to be the next great quarterback like the ones that the Denver franchise has been used to in years past or the ones certain teams around the league have, we’re going to always try and bring in competition. But I have confidence that Drew can continue to improve.”

In 13 starts, Lock finished the 2020 season as the NFL’s 32nd ranked passer with a 75.4 rating. He completed 57.3% of his passes for 2,933 yards and 16 touchdowns, while throwing 15 interceptions.

If Paton looks to free agency for Lock’s competition, notable options with experience include Andy Dalton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Cam Newton, Jacoby Brissett, Tyrod Taylor and Mitchell Trubisky.
