Broncos working to extend “core guy” Justin Simmons long-term

Mar 4, 2021, 3:38 PM

Broncos safety Justin Simmons is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, although the Broncos can retain his rights for another season using the franchise tag as they did in 2020. Speaking to the media on Thursday, general manager George Paton expressed his desire to keep the safety beyond just one more season.

“Justin is one of our core guys. Our goal since I got here is to sign him to a long-term deal,” said Paton. “We have had discussions with his agent. I don’t know if we’ll get a deal done or not, but that’s our goal. He’s the type of guy we want to extend.”

Simmons was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2020 after playing every defensive snap for the Broncos, he was also named the team’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year recipient for his leadership on the field and in the community.
