Cheers and Jeers: Please, Rockies, don’t trade Nolan Arenado

CHEERS | The streaking Colorado Avalanche

With captain Gabriel Landeskog and all-star Mikko Rantanen out for a month apiece, the Colorado Avalanche did a stellar job in maintaining its presence near the top of the Western Conference.

But now that, for the first time since they were 7-0-1 to start the season, the Avs are finally at full strength at forward, and boy are they humming.

Colorado enters Friday night’s tilt with the lowly New Jersey Devils on an eight-game points streak and poised to leapfrog the St. Louis Blues for first place for the second time in a week.

The Blue very well could retain, or extend, their lead atop the conference this weekend, but the Avs will at least be within striking distance when the two teams collide in St. Louis on Monday.

JEERS | Steve Addazio as the next CSU Rams head coach

As fellow Colorado State alumni can attest, self-loathing when it comes to Rams football is a bit of a pastime in Fort Collins.

But even this hire seems to have the most optimistic follower of the green and gold puzzled.

Former CSU Rams running back, and current Ohio State assistant, Tony Alford seemed like the obvious choice, especially with former Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer aiding in the candidate search.

Butch Jones seemed to be CSU’s first choice, albeit a fairly poor one.

So, Addazio, who got fired from Boston College on Dec. 1 after going 44-44 during his tenure as the Eagles head coach, seems to be at best the Rams’ second choice for the job.

Hopefully, Addazio proves the doubters wrong, but jam-packed stands at Canvas Stadium doesn’t seem likely anytime soon.

CHEERS | Drew Lock and the revitalized Broncos

Drew Lock has Broncos Country buzzing, and not just for his killer Buzz Lightyear celebration on Sunday in an upset win over the Houston Texans.

The rookie second-round quarterback has provided something Denver hasn’t seen really since before Peyton Manning’s final season in orange and blue: a spark.

Win or lose this weekend in Kansas City — and by the looks of the 104.3 The Fan host predictions, the latter is more likely — Lock has at least brought Broncos Country some hope.

And can you imagine if he knocks off Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs? Hey, one can dream. To infinity and beyond, right?

JEERS | Trade rumors surrounding Nolan Arenado

Look, yes, Colorado Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich would be foolish not to listen to offers for perennial all-star Nolan Arenado. And plenty have apparently come during the Winter Meetings this week in San Diego.

But Rockies fans, on a purely selfish level, should hope it doesn’t come to that.

Arenado is a living, breathing future Hall of Famer, playing in his prime. How often do sports enthusiasts get to witness greatness in their own backyard as it’s happening?

The answer: not often, if at all.
