Cheers and Jeers: The good, the bad and the ugly with the Rockies

Jun 28, 2019, 6:30 AM

While Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado learned of some well-earned accolades Thursday, the outstanding news of him being named an All-Star Game starter for the National League happened to be sandwiched between implosions of Colorado’s bullpen — all this past weekend and Thursday night.

Meanwhile, this week saw Peyton Manning getting caught fraternizing with the enemy and a sports broadcasting legend signing off after 40 years.

Here are this week’s “cheers” and “jeers”:

Cheers | Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado

On Thursday, Rockies star third baseman Nolan Arenado earned his fifth consecutive trip to the MLB All-Star Game — his third straight time as a starter.

Arenado becomes just the third player in club history to earn five All-Star Game nods, along with Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton.

Garnering 51.9 percent of the vote among third basemen, Arenado was the only player to earn more than half the tally at his specific position, solidifying himself as not only a face of the Rockies organization but also all of Major League Baseball.

Jeers | The Colorado Rockies bullpen

Oy vey.

The past week has not been kind to the Rockies relievers, specifically when it comes to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Over the weekend, the Dodgers earned a three-game sweep of the Rockies in Los Angeles, with all three wins via the walk-off. Oh yeah, and all three walk-offs were of the home run variety. And not to mention, all three walk-off home runs came off the bat of Dodgers rookies.

That’s not exactly the kind of MLB history Colorado would like to make.

To make matters worse, closer Wade Davis gave up four runs in the ninth inning Thursday night, which would make the difference in a 12-8 loss to start a four-game set with L.A. at Coors Field.

When’s the All-Star Break?

Cheers | Longtime ESPN anchor Bob Ley

After a six-month long sabbatical, Bob Ley announced that he’ll retire after anchoring the four biggest letters in sports for the past four decades.

Ley started on day three of ESPN launch in 1979 as an anchor and has since gone on to host numerous programs, including the investigative-focused “Outside the Lines.”

From the closing monologues from “OTL” to reporting on Cuban protesters mid protest, thanks for being, as Scott Van Pelt put it, ESPN’s “moral compass.”

Jeers | New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady

Bruh, we get it. NFL players from different teams are often times friends away from the field.

But, why did you have to go and ruin the illusion that Peyton Manning was anything other than your mortal enemy?

When you hang them up, fine. Go ahead and yuck it up with the Manning and the other elite quarterbacks of your time.

But for now, while you’re still rubbing Super Bowl win after Super Bowl win in our face, can’t you just give us PFM?
