Rockies expected to expedite MLB debut of infielder Brendan Rodgers

May 16, 2019, 9:33 AM

Despite somewhat unfortunate circumstances, Brendan Rodgers’ debut in the Major Leagues appears to be on an expedited path.

Per Rockies.com reporter Thomas Harding, Rodgers will likely get the call up from Triple-A Albuquerque to make his first appearance in an MLB uniform on Friday as the Colorado Rockies head to Philadelphia for a three-game set with the Phillies.

According to Harding, it’s a move that’s been mulled for some time now — and been called for recently by 1043TheFan.com’s James Merilatt — but has been pushed up to this week after a scary outfield collision between Rockies shortstop Trevor Story and left fielder Raimel Tapia on Wednesday.

Story exited the game in the ninth inning, ahead of the Boston Red Sox walk-off winner the following inning, but told reporters he had “just a bone bruise.”

Rodgers’ promotion may be out of necessity, but it’s certainly not without merit.

The organization’s No. 1 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, has been on a tear with the Isotopes of late. After starting off the season slowly, Rodgers has batted .382 with an OPS of 1.152, eight home runs, and 19 RBI since breaking out on April 11.

This season, while early, has been Rodgers best as a professional, batting .356 overall with an OPS of 1.065, 21 RBI and nine home runs.

No official move has been announced by the Rockies, who are off Thursday as they travel to Philadelphia.
