Schlereth touts ‘unique’ strategy used by Broncos head coach Fangio

This week, new Broncos head coach Vic Fangio admitted he’s watched very little film of Denver’s 2018 season — by his count fewer than 150 plays.

But Fangio’s not taking his first ever head coaching gig lightly. Instead, he’s avoided taking in last season as part of a strategy to remove himself from any outside influences as he evaluates his players.

“The only guys I’ve watched are guys we’ve had to make decisions on. But if the guy’s on our roster and he’s going to be on our roster, I want to form my own opinion,” Fangio said. “I don’t want to watch other stuff.”

On Wednesday, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth called Fangio’s philosophy “unique,” saying he “found it interesting,” but touted the idea, adding Broncos players can now enter 2019 with a “clean slate.”

“Instead of formulating an opinion based upon how somebody else, who ended up getting fired, was coaching it, I want to develop my own opinion on my players as we go through OTAs, as we put the work in. And I think that’s a great approach,” Schlereth said.

Schlereth said the philosophy will hold guys accountable and allow the coaching staff to formulate opinions based on the players working with them.

Ultimately, Schlereth said he thinks the strategy likely won Fangio the job this offseason.

“I think this is why John Elway chose Vic Fangio, because of the maturity and because of his approach to the game,” Schlereth said. “And I think it’s a refreshing approach, even though he’s an older guy. You don’t have to be a young guy.
