Could Northwestern’s Clayton Thorson be viable Broncos QB of future?

The Denver Broncos may not look to draft a quarterback with the No. 10-overall pick, but selecting and developing one in the later rounds appears to be a distinct possibility for the club when it comes to next month’s NFL Draft.

On Monday, 9News’ Mike Klis reported among the big-name quarterback prospects visiting with Denver — Dwayne Haskins, Drew Lock, Kyler Murray, and Daniel Jones — the team will also work out Northwestern gunslinger Clayton Thorson as well, much to the delight of “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley.

“I think he’s got a chance to be a good NFL quarterback. I really do. He’s a guy that can handle it under the center, can play in the pocket,” Stokley said.

While his college career wasn’t statistically stunning — in four seasons he passed for 10,731 yards on 991 completions (58.4 completion percentage) for 61 touchdowns and 45 interceptions — Thorson can be someone to develop under Joe Flacco, Stokley said.

“I think you might have to get him in the second round. That’s just my hunch on this guy. You might have to get him in the second round,” Stokley said. “I just think he would be the perfect quarterback to backup Joe Flacco and then to possibly take over for Joe in a couple of years.”

“The Drive” co-host DMac, however, said on Monday he doesn’t see much of a difference between Thorson and guys like Jones, Lock Ryan Finley or Will Grier.

“What I saw was he’s very athletic. This dude can run, for sure. He can throw. But I’m looking at him, and I’m like, well, what is the difference between this guy and Daniel Jones or what is the difference between this guy and Drew Lock or Will Grier or Ryan Finley or, frankly, any of these guys?” DMac said. “And you know what? I don’t know.

“I don’t think I could tell you. I don’t think anybody could tell you.”
