DMac: Trading Case Keenum to Redskins a ‘good deal’ for Broncos

Agreeing on a trade with the Washington Redskins on Thursday, the Denver Broncos ended the short-lived Case Keenum era in the Mile High City.

But with the quarterback receiving a fresh start in Washington and a chance at another starting role, and the Broncos clearing out not only cap space but room for incoming quarterback Joe Flacco, the deal seems to be a win-win for both parties.

“It makes sense for Washington. It absolutely makes sense for Washington. I think it makes sense for Denver as well,” said Chad Brown, “The Drive” co-host on Thursday. “I think you’ve got to move on from the Case Keenum thing. This is the best way to do it.”

Denver and Washington will reportedly swap 2020 draft picks as well, with the Broncos receiving a sixth-round pick and the Redskins a seventh-rounder.

As part of the deal, Denver will pay Keenum a $500,000 contract restructuring bonus and will pick up half of the quarterback’s $7 million in guaranteed for 2019, essentially saving $3 million in cap space this offseason.

“That’s a good deal for the Broncos. One way or the other, dealing Case Keenum is the right deal for the Broncos,” said “The Drive” co-host DMac.

Following a career-year with the Minnesota Vikings in 2017, Keenum signed a two-year contract with Denver this past offseason worth $36 million, $25 million of which was guaranteed.

However, Keenum regressed in his first, and only, season with the Broncos, leading the team to a 6-10 record and the first back-to-back losing seasons for the club since 1972.

While compiling a career-high 3,890 passes, Keenum completed just 62.3 percent of his passes to go with 18 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, and a passer rating of 81.2.
