In wake of Stewart departure, Clough says Broncos should target Weddle

With the departure of Darian Stewart, who said the Denver Broncos will release him on Wednesday, and the possible departure of cornerback Bradley Roby, the lone remaining member of the “No Fly Zone” will be Chris Harris Jr.

“Roby will be gone. And we know now Darian Stewart is gone. One more piece of the ‘No Fly Zone’ going away,” said 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough on Wednesday, addressing the end of the era for the Broncos secondary.

Plenty of speculation has gone into how Denver might pursue replacing Roby, of if they’ll even retain his services, including using a high draft pick on the position.

But the club now seems poised to wade deep into a free agency market at full of heavy-hitters at safety, including Earl Thomas, Landon Collins, Adrian Amos, and several others.

However, the name Clough said would be a strong addition to the Broncos roster in the wake of Stewart’s departure is 34-year-old Eric Weddle, whom the Baltimore Ravens released this week.

“That’s the guy I’d bring in — a savvy, smart safety who’s been a part of very good defensive teams and, next to Vic Fangio’s Bears, the best defensive team in the league this year,” Clough said.

Clough said Weddle wouldn’t necessarily be in a starting role but rather for veteran relief and mentorship for young safeties Will Parks and Justin Simmons.

“No, he’s not the player he once was. But I wouldn’t play him necessarily on a regular basis. He’d be your third safety behind Justin Simmons and Will Parks,” Clough said.
