Rockies, star 3B Arenado agree on 8-year, $260 million extension

Nolan Arenado will remain in Colorado Rockies purple for at least a few more seasons, if not longer, after coming to an agreement on an eight-year extension, the team announced Tuesday.

First reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the deal is worth $260 million — which gives Arenado the highest per-year salary for a position player in MLB history at $32.5 million — and includes a full no-trade clause and an opt-out after the 2021 season.

The agreement ensures Arenado won’t hit the free agent market following the 2019 season after he and the club avoided arbitration earlier this offseason by agreeing on a one-year, $26 million deal — the highest salary for any arbitration-eligible player in MLB history.

An All-Star and Silver Slugger winner in each of the past four seasons, Arenado has also finished in the top 10 in National League MVP voting since 2015. And in each of his seven seasons at the Major League level, the sure-handed fielder has won a Gold Glove.
