Rockies, manager Bud Black agree on 3-year extension through 2022

Bud Black is set to remain in purple pinstripes for the foreseeable future, as the Colorado Rockies announced a contract extension with its manager on Monday through the 2022 season.

The three-year extension will be in addition to this season, making Black’s total contract four years, general manager Jeff Bridich said.

“The team has done well, and even more than that Buddy has seamlessly become part of our leadership fabric,” Bridich said. “And our organization, as a whole, is better for it.”

Bridich championed Black’s patience in the face of adversity, saying the veteran manager brings a calming influence on the team throughout a long season.

“There are those stress points in any season, in great seasons and not-so-great seasons. There’s a consistent kind of calmness to being able to breathe and being able to calm things down in the face of fire or unfortunate events or when things don’t go your way,” Bridich said of Black. “There’s a lack of panic.”

As an outsider looking in, before being hired in November 2016, Black said he would fit in with the organization, that if the job opened up it would be one he would be interested in.

“I feel that where we are as a team — where we can get to, ultimately, is what this is all about — I’m grateful for the trust Jeff places in me to do this job,” Black said.

Black led the Rockies to back-to-back playoff appearances in his first two seasons in Colorado, the first manager in club history to do so, while also finishing each campaign as a finalist for National League Manager of the Year.

Overall in his first two seasons as manager, Black has a 178-147 (.548) record, good enough for the highest mark by any Rockies manager in club history.

In 2018, Black helped Colorado to a 91-72 record, the second-most wins in a single season in franchise history.

“It’s a good organization. It’s a very, very solid organization. And you’re hearing about this now nationally,” Black said Monday. “I think people in the game, people in the know are talking about the Rockies, which is a great thing.”
