Seemingly in ‘win-now mode,’ could Elway be making his last stand?

The general consensus after the Denver agreed to a deal in principle with the Baltimore Ravens to trade for veteran quarterback Joe Flacco has been the Broncos are in a “win-now mode.”

But on Tuesday, The Fan War Room examined exactly why general manager John Elway pushed in all the chips now, asking if this could be his “last stand” as an executive.

“Absolutely,” answered “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard. “I mean, John Elway, he does not know how to lose. He does not accept losing. And for him to sign up for another losing season with a rookie quarterback, that’s just not John Elway’s DNA.”

Pritchard added that moves like trading for Flacco are not “long-term oriented” and instead serve to win right now.

“Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mike Evans said he too believes Elway is in the twilight of his executive career, saying he knows what wins and what wins long-term.

“If he was somebody that looked at his career horizon and said, ‘I want to be doing this 10 years from now,’ isn’t there a strong belief that he would be thinking more long-term with his actions?” Evans said.

However, Brandon Stokley, co-host of “Stokley and Zach,” said he thinks the move to acquire Flacco more closely reflects Elway’s desire to quickly remedy the failure of back-to-back losing seasons in 2017 and 2018.

“I think the situation has called for him to act this way, also. I don’t think John knows what he’s going to do in three years,” Stokley said. “I don’t think he looks that far down the list. I think what has happened the past two years has dictated the way he’s acting now.”
