Did Scangarello’s comments on Keenum tip off Broncos plan at QB?

Jan 24, 2019, 9:58 PM | Updated: 9:59 pm

In his first press conference Thursday as the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos, Rich Scangarello said he is “excited” to work with Case Keenum, calling him “gritty,” a “winner,” and “competitive.”

But, what does the new play-caller’s remarks about his quarterback mean for Keenum’s future with the Broncos? Not much, said “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley on Thursday.

“You hear what he says, but, to me, that doesn’t tell me anything,” Stokley said. “Like, yeah, he likes Case Keenum. What else is he going to say? That guy might be his quarterback. Does he know for sure that guy’s going to be his quarterback? I don’t think he does. I mean, that’s (general manager) John (Elway’s) call.”

Scangarello said he sees “traits” in Keenum that he can help improve, and his goal is to put an offense and players around him that can “empower him to play confident like he was in Minnesota” in 2017.

And Stokley’s co-host, Zach Bye, said he believes what Scangarello said were “authentic” comments.

But, in the end, it might all be for naught, Stokley said.

“I think (Elway) has a plan in place whether he wanted to keep (Keenum) or not and whether he wanted to draft a guy or not this year,” Stokley said. “I think he’s got his plan on what he wants to do, and having (Scangarello) as the offensive coordinator doesn’t change it at all.”
