DMac: A Broncos rebuild means tough conversations, like trading Von

Jan 1, 2019, 5:54 PM

While John Elway might not like the term “rebuild,” saying in his season-ending press conference Monday that it sounds like an excuse, by most accounts the Denver Broncos appear to be heading into a full-on rebuild this offseason.

And with rebuilding, “The Drive” co-host DMac said on Tuesday, comes tough conversations, like the idea of trading Von Miller while his value is still high.

“Do you really need Von Miller in a rebuilding mode anyway? You don’t,” DMac said. “I wish it wasn’t the case.”

The comments come after “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth too said the Broncos were in a rebuilding mode, and he would ship off the All-Pro pass rusher for the right price.

“I would trade Von Miller if I got a haul like the Bears got for Khalil Mack,” Schlereth said.

Earlier this season, Chicago sent the Oakland Raiders a first-round and sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft along with a first-round and third-round pick in the 2020 draft in exchange for Mack, a 2020 second-round pick, and a conditional 2020 fifth-round pick.

Miller is coming off a season in which he had 14.5 sacks, the second-highest mark in his career. And it’s imminently important to strike while the iron is hot with Miller in terms of trade value, DMac said, because anything can happen in the NFL.

“Can you imagine a nightmare where you don’t trade Von, it’s the third week of the season, you’re clearly rebuilding, and he tears his Achilles like Emmanuel Sanders does?” DMac said. “The time is now. And it’s not an insult to Von.”

DMac’s co-host, Alfred “Big Al” Williams, also said that trading Miller, along with moving on from other big-name veterans like Chris Harris Jr. and Derek Wolfe, would allow them to flourish late in their careers in a situation with more “optimism.”

“This rebuild is going to be ugly,” Williams said.
