Broncos should forgo Flacco, continue to build core, Lammey says

With Joe Flacco not expected to be back with the Baltimore Ravens in 2019 after losing his starting role to rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson, there has been a growing sentiment that the Denver Broncos should be one the veteran gunslinger’s suitors.

On Thursday, however, Cecil Lammey said that while the notion of bringing in Flacco, and potentially pairing him with Gary Kubiak as offensive coordinator, is interesting, ultimately, the wise move for the Broncos would be to continue rebuilding its roster.

“Maybe John Elway wants to be competitive,” said Lammey, who filled in on “The Drive” on Thursday. “I still think it’s best if you’re not desperate and you’ve already lost two losing seasons in a row to just rebuild it and find your guy.:”

Lammey asked what it proves to bring in Flacco, who commands a hefty salary, and continue to float around 8-8.

“Why do you make that move to add a guy to pay him a bunch of money when you’re not going to make that run?” Lammey said. “Build. Keep building your core. Get your young guy in 2020, and then make your run.”

According to Spotrac.com, Flacco is under contract until 2021 and is set to make $26.5 million in 2019, $28.25 million in 2020, and $24.25 million in 2021. The dead cap figure for Flacco in 2019 would be $16 million to go with $8 million in 2020.

However, on Wednesday, Lammey said that the Broncos need to have some sort of plan in place behind current quarterback Case Keenum in 2019, that if Denver enters next season with him as the starter with no future options behind him fans may revolt.

“If you’re going with Case Keenum again and you’ve got no plan, no guy to say he’s our next guy, we’re grooming him, we’re excited about him … if you don’t have that, Broncos Country, it’ll be mutiny because they don’t want to see Case Keenum again,” said Lammey, who filled in for “Stokley and Zach” on Wednesday.
