Lammey: ‘Mutiny’ if Broncos head into 2019 with no plan behind Keenum

Given the landscape of the free agency market and draft prospect, coupled with a possible dead cap hit of $10 million, the likelihood of Case Keenum remaining the Denver Broncos quarterback in 2019 seems high.
But if there’s not a future quarterback in waiting next season, said Cecil Lammey on Wednesday, there could be a “mutiny” among Broncos Country.
“If you’re going with Case Keenum again and you’ve got no plan, no guy to say he’s our next guy, we’re grooming him, we’re excited about him … if you don’t have that, Broncos Country, it’ll be mutiny because they don’t want to see Case Keenum again,” said Lammey, who filled in for “Stokley and Zach” on Wednesday.
On the other hand, if the Broncos draft or otherwise acquire a quarterback, then theoretically there will be an “expiration date” on Keenum, Lammey said.
“If there’s that expiration date, I think Broncos Country will be OK with that,” Lammey said.
Lammey’s co-host Wednesday, John Davis, agreed that if Denver doesn’t bring in another quarterback, the club could face backlash among its fans.
“If there’s nobody behind him, whether it be a rookie or a Teddy Bridgewater or any of those people, the training camp numbers, I think you’ll see that lower,” Davis said. “You’ll see people selling tickets more.”
However, Davis said that he thinks it is unsustainable for the Broncos to have a young quarterback waiting in the wings and keep Keenum as the starting quarterback.
“I think if they do bring in the rookie quarterback … I don’t even know if you can start Case at that point. The calls are going to come immediately,” Davis said.
If indeed a rookie quarterback can push Keenum, Lammey said to learn from the Trevor Siemian-Paxton Lynch debacle and name him the starter.
“They need a long-term answer at the position, and per Case Keenum’s contract and per Case Keenum’s play, he’s not that long-term answer. So the Broncos need to find that guy, however they choose to do that,” Lammey said.
