Vance Joseph: ‘Get the call right’ on missed two-point conversion

All’s well that ends well, and things ended well for the Denver Broncos on Sunday following a come-from-behind win over AFC West foe Los Angeles Chargers. But what appears to be a missed call in a key moment from the end of the game not only nearly cost the Broncos the game but had head coach Vance Joseph up in arms after.

The moment: a failed two-point conversion that would have given Denver a three-point lead with 12:17 left in the game.

In television replays it appeared Broncos quarterback Case Keenum had the two-pointer on a QB sneak, but referees said he was down before the ball crossed the goal line.

“We kind of thought that we scored, but (from) the view upstairs we couldn’t tell. Obviously, you want to challenge that, but my concern is obviously don’t miss the call,” Joseph said after the game.

By NFL rule, all scoring players are reviewable, which had Joseph taking exception in his postgame press conference.

“I don’t want to challenge it — get the call right. How about that? Don’t always put it on us. Get the call right,” Joseph said. “I didn’t have a view to challenge it, and it was called on the field that he didn’t get in.

“If you don’t have a view upstairs, how can you challenge it with no view? It’s going to be inconclusive, and it’s going to go back to the field call. If it was good, get it right like we have to. How about that?”

The ensuing drive, the Chargers converted a field goal to take a late fourth-quarter lead 22-20. But the Broncos managed to march down the field with 50 seconds left in the game to pull out a win on a last-second field goal from Brandon McManus.
