Broncos rookie class comes up big again in comeback win vs. Chargers

Nov 18, 2018, 7:39 PM

As they have all season, the Denver Broncos rookie class — led by running backs Phillip Lindsay — came up big again on Sunday in a come-from-behind victory against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“It is certainly validation for the rookie class today,” said 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough after the game.

Lindsay scored on the ground twice, rushing the ball 11 times for 79 yards — 41 of which came on his first touchdown scamper — while catching the ball four times for 27 yards.

“He’s growing before our eyes,” Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said of Lindsay after the game. “He is an NFL first-, second-, third-down back. It’s amazing with his size what he can do on all three downs — catching the ball, protecting, running in the A, B, and C gap.

“He’s a good little football player, and, obviously, it’s no fluke. I mean, we’re in Week 11, and he’s still doing it.”

Fellow rookie running back Royce Freeman added another touchdown of his own while rookie wide receiver Courtland Sutton caught a 30-yard pass from Case Keenum to set up kicker Brandon McManus for a game-winning kick as time expired.

On the other side of the ball, rookie linebacker Bradley Chubb grabbed yet another sack, high ninth on the season, while getting two tackles for loss and two quarterback hits.

The sack gives Chubb the fourth-most through his first 10 games in NFL history, just behind Broncos linebacker Von Miller (9.5).

After the game, the veteran pass rusher praised his protégé.

“Bradley Chubb played out of his mind. That’s the defensive rookie of the year in my opinion,” Miller said. “… Chubb just shined out today.”
