‘Preposterous’ to think the Broncos have interest in Le’Veon Bell

Among the 11 teams listed by Pro Football Talk on Tuesday as possible suitors for Le’Veon Bell next March sits the Denver Broncos.

However, both “Pritchard and Cecil” co-hosts Mike Pritchard and Cecil Lammey called the idea of the Broncos pursuing Bell ‘preposterous’ on Wednesday.

“Le’Veon Bell is a superstar, really good player, but why are the Broncos on that list?” Lammey said.

Salary considerations reigned chief among the concerns in Denver possibly courting Bell, who Lammey said could command a deal that pays him “borderline starting quarterback money.”

“The Broncos, they need cap room to help their roster. That’s why they traded (Demaryius Thomas). They can’t keep everybody,” Pritchard said. “But, see, you limit your ability to maneuver if you eat up a big portion of your cap with Le’Veon Bell.”

The club doesn’t have a history of paying running backs, Pritchard said, and, instead, they plug in players into a system that at one point churned out yearly 1,000-yard rushers.

“They’re not going to overpay a running back. They don’t need to. They don’t have to. They never have. So, why would they do that?” Pritchard said. “Why would the Broncos do that now?”

And why “commit those types of dollars” to a single running back, Lammey said, when Denver already boasts the one-two punch of Royce Freeman and Phillip Lindsay, both of whom are on rookie deals?

“For what the Broncos are going to have to give up in terms of salary cap, at the same time putting other players on the bench more, it’s not a proper fit for the Broncos,” Pritchard said. “I don’t think Le’Veon Bell fits with what they want to do. Great player, but he’s just not a good fit.”
