Big Al: ‘Excellence’ expected from Buffaloes head coach MacIntyre

Nov 13, 2018, 5:42 PM

The tenure of Mike MacIntyre at the University of Colorado may be ending, as a report from Denver 7 Insider Troy Renck says sources indicate the football coach and school will part way at the end of the 2018 season.

On Tuesday, former Buffaloes star and “The Drive” co-host Alfred “Big Al” Williams had critical words regarding MacIntyre.

“When you’re the highest-paid state employee, you’re looked at for excellence. And if you’re not going to be excellent, then you’ve got to move on to somebody else,” Williams said.

Williams said he saw the “writing was on the wall” after CU’s loss to Oregon State.

The Buffs led the Beavers 31-3 early in the third quarter at home but gave up the advantage in the second half, eventually losing 41-34 in overtime.

The game serves as the low point in a five-game skid that’s seen Colorado go from a stunning 5-0 to 5-5 and hoping for another win to become bowl eligible.

“You look at how he has been recruiting and the athletes that he’s brought on campus, I think they’ve turned the corner in that regard. But, a 5-0 to an 0-5 slide, you’ve got to investigate what’s going with that and fix it,” said Mike Pritchard, former Buffaloes star and co-host of “Pritchard and Cecil.”

Williams said the “cupboards are not bare” at CU, that MacIntyre has a strong offensive line, quarterback, running back, receiver, and defense. But, in the end, despite having the “tools,” the head coach has faltered.

“MacIntyre has had a chance to go through an entire class that he has recruited,” Williams said. “Two classes that he has recruited, wholly got them in, and these guys should be the seniors on the team making the plays. They aren’t making the plays, so what do you do?”

In six seasons as the Buffs play caller, MacIntyre holds a 30-43 record and just one bowl appearance — the 2016 Alamo Bowl, which CU lost 38-8 to Oklahoma State.
