Denver Broncos release Chad Kelly following arrest early Tuesday

Oct 24, 2018, 9:24 AM | Updated: 9:50 am

The Denver Broncos have released Chad Kelly in the wake of the backup quarterback’s arrest early Tuesday morning.

In a release to the media, general manager John Elway said releasing Kelly was the right organizational decision.

“This was a decision that we made as an organization,” Elway said. “After reviewing all the information and in talking with Vance (Joseph) and Joe (Ellis), we agreed that releasing Chad was the right thing to do.

“Even though Chad’s no longer part of our team, we’ve offered to help him however we can and are supportive of him in every possible way.”

The move comes just a day after Kelly was arrested on a charge of first-degree criminal trespass following a players-organized Halloween party at the Gothic Theatre in Englewood.

According to a release from the Englewood Police Department, Kelly entered a residence near the venue, was chased out by an occupant and then later located inside a black SUV near the theater.

Kelly appeared in Arapahoe County Court on Tuesday but did not speak with members of the media as he left.

Denver selected Kelly with the 253rd pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the final or “Mr. Irrelevant” selection, taking a chance on the once-troubled nephew of former Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.

Among his past transgressions, Kelly was charged with resisting arrest, menacing, and other counts after an altercation outside a nightclub in Buffalo, New York.

With the move, the Broncos will now turn to backup Kevin Hogan, whom the team brought in following the release of Paxton Lynch in early September.
