Schlereth: Trade talk shows Broncos still a ‘distance’ from contending

Oct 23, 2018, 10:28 AM

Trade speculation surrounding the Denver Broncos possibly looking to move Demaryius Thomas and Brandon Marshall, among others, has signaled several things, among them a chance to get younger.

“I don’t think it should be a surprise. And this is where they’re at. You can call it transitioning. You can call it rebuilding. But, the youth movement has to be underway,” said “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mike Evans on Tuesday.

Evans’ co-host, Mark Schlereth, said on Tuesday that, to him, the trade talks mean the Broncos are a ways off from contending in the AFC West.

“It tells you that you’re still some distance away from being a really competitive, good football team and being able to be in the upper echelon and competing for this division again with the likes of Kansas City, with the likes of the Chargers,” Schlereth said.

Schlereth said Denver’s sending the signal that they need more depth, that they haven’t done a good enough job in past drafts building up the roster.

But if moving on from players like Thomas and Marshall mean younger players get more reps, Schlereth said he’s “all for it.”

“If they have to move guys because they have got to bolster this team and get some young guys some playing time, then I’m all for it,” Schlereth said.
