Big Al: Despite win vs. Cards, Broncos should ‘move away’ from Keenum

Oct 19, 2018, 5:36 PM

Despite putting a hurt on the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday Night Football to the tune of 45-10, the Denver Broncos still had their struggles, specifically on the offensive side of the ball.

Quarterback Case Keenum said after the game that, especially in the second half, there were things the offense could improve upon.

“We did some good things in the second half, but I think there’s a lot of things we can fix,” Keenum said. “I think we can play better especially as an offense.”

On Friday, “The Drive” co-host Alfred “Big Al” Williams said that Keenum specifically did not do what he needed to do Thursday night to change the waning opinion of the Broncos quarterback.

“It was average,” Williams said of Keenum’s night. “He hit a wide-open Emmanuel Sanders, and that was for a touchdown. But other than that, what was it, 14-for-21? Not a great night.”

On the night, Keenum threw for just 161 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 14-of-21 passing for a passer rating of 85.6.

The performance, Williams said, indicates that the Broncos should “move away” from Keenum at some point, that “he’s not the quarterback of the future of this team.”

“What I’m telling you is that he’s not our quarterback of the future,” Williams said. “After seeing these young quarterbacks perform and throw the football all across the field, there is another level that we can get to.”

Williams said he believes the Broncos will address the quarterback in the NFL Draft next offseason because “they have to get better at that position” and Keenum will be gone after his two-year, $36 million deal is up.

“I’m just telling you I think it’s a two-year deal. It’s a two-year deal and he’s not going to be re-signed for a five-year, $100 million deal,” Williams said.
