Is it time for the Broncos to shake up its defensive coaching staff?

Oct 7, 2018, 4:44 PM

It’s been since the early weeks of the Peyton Manning era that the Denver Broncos gave up more than 250 yards rushing to an opponent.

On Sunday, the Broncos yielded 323 yards to the New York Jets in a 34-16 loss on the road, the team’s third in a row.

After the Jets nearly doubled their season rushing total against the Broncos, calls for defensive coordinator Joe Woods job could be heard around Broncos Country, and among the 104.3 The Fan staff.

“It’s time to make a move on the defensive side of the ball for the Denver Broncos. It just hasn’t been good enough,” said “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley. “I thought after last week that they were heading in the right direction, but apparently not.”

“The Drive” co-host DMac said that “head should roll,” starting with Woods, while putting head coach Vance Joseph “on notice.”

“Something has to change,” said “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Cecil Lammey.

“We should see Denver move on from defensive coordinator Joe Woods. There are too many communication breakdowns and too many big plays surrendered by this Broncos defense,” Lammey said.

After the game, however, Joseph said he does not believe the Broncos are “there yet” in terms of looking to shake up personnel on the coaching staff.

“I thought we were sound schematically. But again, it always starts with coaching. We have to coach better so they can play better,” Joseph said. “But we pay our players to play also, so it’s not just coaching. It’s all of us involved.

“I’m not going to stand up here after a loss like that and start blaming our coaches or our players. It starts with me, and we have to coach and play better. Coaches coach and players play.”

On the day, Denver gave up 34 points to a Jets team that through its first four games averaged 22.25 points per game. Moreover, New York had 512 yards of offense, nearly double its average for 2018 (289.25 yards).
