Phillip Lindsay goes from ‘cute’ local story to NFL rookie sensation

Sep 17, 2018, 7:25 PM

Not Saquon Barkley. Not Sony Michel or Kerryon Johnson. Not Nick Chubb, or Rashaad Penny or even Royce Freeman. Through two weeks in the 2018 season, undrafted Denver Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay leads all rookies in rushing yards.

By 44 yards.

The talented hometown running back, who went to South High School in Denver before attending the University of Colorado, also leads all rookies in rushing attempts (29) and average yards per carry (6.1) among those with double-digit attempts.

“Here’s the fact of the matter. Phillip Lindsay has had a better start to his NFL career and made more of an impact in his NFL career than Saquon Barkley has,” said “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mike Evans on Monday.

“Saquon Barkley is the second-overall pick in the draft. Phillip Lindsay was undrafted.”

On Sunday, Lindsay rushed for 107 yards on 14 carries, the first 100-yard rushing game by a Broncos rookie since Montee Ball did it in December 2013.

Eclipsing the mark also put Lindsay into the NFL record books as the only rookie to record at least 100 yards from scrimmage in each of his first two career games.

“He’s a hometown kid. Undrafted guy. Great story. Cute story. Fun story. All of those things. And then it turns out to be more than I think anybody could have expected,” said “Stokley and Zach co-host Brandon Stokley on Monday. “It turned out better than what even the highest expectations that you could have had of Phillip Lindsay.

“It was just a great story him making the football team, not to have this kind of contribution the first couple of weeks.”

Stokley’s co-host Zach Bye echoed his partner’s comments on Monday, saying, “There’s no way anyone saw him rushing for more yards through two weeks than Saquon Barkley. There’s no way.

“It is now an NFL story. Not a local story, it’s an NFL story”
