Lammey: ‘Disciplined’ play from Roby not likely to show up in stats

Bradley Roby has made his fair share of field-flipping plays during his tenure with the Denver Broncos (Jamaal Charles, we’re looking at you here).

But “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Cecil Lammey cautioned Broncos fans to not necessarily expect those flashy, highlight reel type plays from Roby, as was expected from the man he’s replacing, Aqib Talib.

“I want fans to really understand that you’re not going to see those stats. You’re not going to see those pick-sixes,” Lammey said. “You may, once in a while, see a fumble recovery for a touchdown. We’ve seen that before with Bradley Roby.”

Instead, Lammey says fans should expect Roby to play a solid brand of defense for Denver because that’s the way he’s being coached.

“We’ve seen Roby make those field-flipping type of plays, but we need the fans to know that’s not the way he’s being coached,” Lammey said. “If he’s in position to make a play, he will. He’s not going to be what scouts call a ‘casino cornerback’ the way Aqib Talib is.”

Lammey’s comments echo those of head coach Vance Joseph, who said on Tuesday he’s stressed to Roby about playing “disciplined and playing team football.”

“I told Bradley, ‘I don’t want to judge you on how many plays you make. You’re judged on how many you give up.’ That’s what I want from our corners,” Joseph said. “If you’re in a good position, you’ll make enough plays, but don’t cheat. Don’t gamble to make plays, because that’s not what winning is about, that’s about you.”

Roby said on Tuesday that he’s “very pleased” with his self-discipline and that he knows that big plays are going to come his way.

“I just also have to know not to try too hard or try to do things that are not in my job to get those things done,” Roby said. “If you just do your job and stay where you’re supposed to be, then they’ll come.”
