Report: Nuggets ‘aggressively pursue’ meeting with LeBron James

Jul 1, 2018, 10:15 AM | Updated: 10:52 am

The Denver Nuggets appear to want in on the LeBron James sweepstakes.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Chris Mannix, the club has been in contact with James’ agent and are “aggressively pursue a meeting” with the highly-sought free agent.

The report comes on the heels of the Nuggets wrapping up guard Will Barton to a four-year deal worth an expected $54 million.

Barton, who averaged career highs in points (15.7) and assists (4.1) in 2017-’18, made roughly $3.5 million this past season.

The deal coincides what’s expected to be a five-year, $148 million max contract for center Nikola Jokic, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported early Sunday.

Earlier this month, 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough lamented that among the teams mentioned in the free agency rumor mill as destinations for James, Denver was not one of them.

“The Nuggets are young. The Nuggets have a core group of talented players. Malone and James have worked together in the past. There’s a rapport, the pre-existing rapport that exists between the two” Clough said at the time. “Why don’t the Nuggets ever get mentioned?”

Clough also said the Nuggets “technically” have enough to make an offer to the San Antonio Spurs for Kawhi Leonard, potentially a key player in where James decides to set up shop next season.

“Now, maybe the Spurs wouldn’t want to trade him within the conference, but if he’s saying I don’t want to play in San Antonio anymore, they’re kind of forced to trade him,” Clough said. “And there are only so many teams who could make that trade.”
