Paxton Lynch will “never become the guy” for Broncos, Stokley says

A day after “The Drive” host Alfred Williams said signs point to Paxton Lynch being the future under center for the Denver Broncos, “Stokley and Zach” host Brandon Stokley offered a rebuttal.

“Paxton Lynch will never become the guy,” Stokley said Wednesday.

Williams argued on Tuesday that starting quarterback Case Keenum was brought in during free agency to as a mentor to Lynch and will move on once his two-year deal with Denver expires.

“The contract is structured so that at the end of two years, Case Keenum walks away,” Williams said. “At the same time, the Broncos can go ahead and extend Paxton Lynch for one year and let him continue on as the quarterback as he’s learning how to play the game right now.”

Stokley, however, said he “can’t go there,” that Keenum’s only role being a mentor to the former first-round pick isn’t a “real possibility,” especially with the Broncos needing to decide whether to pick up his fifth-round option next offseason.

“I think Paxton Lynch is an afterthought,” Stokley said. “I think they’re not expecting him to ever be the starting quarterback here.”

He added: “Maybe Case Keenum can help out Paxton Lynch, but I don’t think that’s part of some kind of master plan of John Elway and Vance Joseph and the Denver Broncos.”

“Pritchard and Cecil” host Mike Pritchard said on Wednesday there is a two-year window for the Broncos to right the ship with Keenum at the helm, but that ultimately means the veteran has the support of the organization.

“They’re all-in on Case Keenum. They’re all-in on this situation,” Pritchard said.

Last week, Lynch said it was “really good” to have a guy like Keenum to lean on, something in which he hasn’t had during his short career.

“… The way that he carries himself, how he’s in the building, how he works with these guys and how he interacts with these guys. It’s good to see, especially for me,” Lynch said.
