Broncos reportedly acquire safety Su’a Cravens in trade with Redskins

Mar 28, 2018, 10:27 AM

The Denver Broncos have agreed to a trade with the Washington Redskins for safety Su’a Cravens, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports.

According to Schefter, the Broncos and Redskins will swap fourth- and fifth-round picks and Denver will send an additional fifth-rounder to Washington for Cravens.

The two teams had been in talks about Cravens, a former second-round pick, going as far back as late February.

At that time, Fan Football Insider Cecil Lammey reported the jumping off point in terms of compensation for Cravens was a second-round pick, a price at which “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley balked.

“Now, he’s a very talented guy, a second-round pick by the Redskins. A sixth-, seventh-round pick, OK,” Stokley said. “I’ll gamble. I’ll gamble on a guy like that. But other than that, no. No chance.”

Cravens, who’ll turn 23 in July, had plans to retire ahead of last season before team coaches and executives changed his mind, per an ESPN report. He did not play at all in 2017.

The NFL reinstated Cravens from the exempt/left squad list in February, after which Redskins veteran defensive back DeAngelo Hall told 106.7 The Fan in Washington there was “room for Su’a” on the roster but his leaving the team would be “a tough thing for a lot of guys in this locker room to just look past.”

“I don’t know where his heart is at,” Stokley said. “A lot of his teammates questioned that last year. And, I think it’s safe to say a lot of his teammates thought he quit on them last year.

“DeAngelo Hall has come out and said he has to gain the locker room’s trust back. So, I look at a guy like that, and I’m not willing to give up a fifth-round pick.”

During his rookie season in 2016, Cravens played in 11 games for Washington, starting three, racking up one interception, one sack, five passes defensed, and 23 tackles.
