CJ Anderson’s future with Broncos uncertain following Elway comments

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway didn’t have a definitive answer in an interview with 9News’ Mike Klis on Sunday whether C.J. Anderson would be back with the team next season.

Elway, speaking from the NFL meetings in Orlando, Florida, said that Anderson “may or may not” return to the Broncos following a 1,000-yard season in 2017.

“Who knows? We’re going to continue to massage this thing, figure out what’s best,” Elway told Klis. “C.J. obviously had a great year for us. We’ll see where it takes us.”

Elway’s comments come just a few weeks removed from a report from Fan Football Insider Cecil Lammey saying that, with Anderson not being cut by the Broncos, four teams could have interest in trading for the running back.

Lammey said the “buzz was strongest” about the New England Patriots, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and San Francisco 49ers inquiring about Anderson.

In 2017, Anderson eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career, running for 1,007 yards.

It was also the first season Anderson had started and played in all 16 games of the regular season after starting just seven games in 2016 and 2014 and six games in 2015.

Anderson is due to make $4.5 million in salary in 2018 and 2019 with no dead cap attached. He signed a four-year, $18 million deal with the Broncos in 2016 after the team matched an offer sheet from the Miami Dolphins for the restricted free agent.
