Lammey: Broncos should trade up to No. 2 if they fall in love with QB

Mar 23, 2018, 9:19 AM

As the Denver Broncos head north to Laramie, Wyoming, to watch Josh Allen’s pro day — and as they’ve done for Baker Mayfield, Josh Rosen, and top prospects — the notion the team could take a quarterback in this year’s NFL Draft remains a distinct possibility.

And if general manager John Elway and company have fallen in love with a quarterback prospect, Fan Football Insider Cecil Lammey said the Broncos should look to trade up to No. 2 to get its guy.

“John Elway, pick up the phone. Talk to (New York Giants GM Dave) Gettleman. Make it happen,” Lammey said Thursday. “Because, if you move up to No. 2, it ensures you get almost exactly what you want.”

And with the Giants trading pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday — potentially to create space to draft defensive end Bradley Chubb — Lammey’s “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard said moving to No. 2 “might be easier.”

“If you go from No. 5 to No. 2, you guarantee you get the person you want, whether it’s the quarterback, whether it’s the running back, whether it’s an offensive lineman, whether it’s a defensive lineman, whether it’s a defensive back,” Pritchard said.

“You practically … No, you don’t practically. You do. You guarantee your pick.”

The comments, however, come amid a report from NJ.com Eagles reporter Matt Lombardo, who tweeted Friday morning that it “doesn’t sound like the Broncos are targeting a quarterback, even if they trade up in next month’s NFL Draft.”

Lombardo, instead, reports the Broncos could possibly look to trade up for Penn State running back Saquon Barkley.

Elway, following quarterback Case Keenum’s introductory press conference, said the team would start looking at the “different ways” it could go once they get into draft meetings early next month.

“We have a lot of opportunities at five now. We’re in good spots. We’re high in a lot of rounds,” Elway said. “As I said, it’s going to be important for us to find guys that can help our football team.”
