Lammey: Eagles ‘very open’ to Foles deal, price likely too rich for Broncos

The Philadelphia Eagles are “very open” to trading quarterback Nick Foles, sources tell Fan Football Insider Cecil Lammey, though the asking price is likely too rich for the Denver Broncos blood.

Lammey reported on Monday that his sources indicated that Foles is available in trade talks and the asking price could be possible as low as a second- and a fourth-round pick.

However, despite the cost for Foles being “a little bit lower” than Lammey expected the quarterback to fetch, Denver’s still likely uninterested in Foles at that price, he said.

“I’ve heard that the Broncos might have kicked the tires on Nick Foles, but they have other plans at the quarterback position,” Lammey said. “Nick Foles is not on their radar basically because the price is too high for what they want to do.”

Foles has garnered a lot of attention this offseason after taking over in Week 14 for Carson Wentz, who suffered a season-ending knee injury the previous week.

The journeyman quarterback started three regular season games for Philadelphia, going 2-1, while leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl 52 victory over the New England Patriots in February.

Passing for three touchdowns — on 28-of-43 passing for 373 yards — and catching one of his own, Foles earned Super Bowl MVP honors.

During his press availability at the NFL Combine, Broncos general manager John Elway said the club plans on exploring “all options and free agency and see where that goes.”

“Obviously we’ve got the fifth pick in the draft, too. That will all play into it,” Elway said. “We’ll continue to look at all of the options out there when it comes to quarterback.”

Elway said he doesn’t think the Broncos are “too far away” from being a playoff team once again, but the team needs to “get better at (the quarterback) position.”

Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe offered his thoughts on the team’s quarterback situation on Friday with “Schlereth and Evans,” specifically on the difference between drafting a player at the position and picking up a veteran.

“If you bring in a rookie quarterback, there are two more years of the same-old-same-old. It doesn’t matter,” Wolfe said. “It’s going to take two years for a quarterback … I’m just going off the history of the league. It takes two years for a guy, two years minimum, for a guy to get it.”

Foles, who played in Kansas City and St. Louis after being originally drafted by the Eagles in 2012, is among a group of potentially available quarterbacks this offseason, including Kirk Cousins and Case Keenum.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported last week that the final four teams left vying for Cousins services are the Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, and Minnesota Vikings.

However, CBS Sports NFL reporter Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday he’s been “hearing more and more about the Broncos and Case Keenum,” while New York or Minnesota are the likely landing spots for Cousins.

According to Lammey, the Broncos are either “first or second” in the conversation for Cousins, and that the two teams left vying for his services are Denver and Minnesota.

“People are saying there are four teams left. There’s actually only two when you look at what Cousins wants and what teams fit best. That is Minnesota and that is Denver,” Lammey said.
