Report: Broncos hire Tom McMahon as special teams coordinator

The Denver Broncos have reportedly hired former Indianapolis Colts special teams coordinator for the same position with the club.

First reported by former Colts punter and current Barstool Sports correspondent Pat McAfee, McMahon heads to the Broncos after spending five seasons in Indianapolis.

McMahon’s experience includes stints with the Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, St. Louis Rams, and Atlanta Falcons over 11 seasons. He also coached at the Division I college level from 1995 to 2006 at Utah State and Louisville.

Since the 2012 season, McMahon has coached three Pro Bowlers — McAfee (2012, 2014), kicker Adam Vinatieri (2014), punter Dustin Colquitt (2012) — and two All-Pros (McAfee and Vinatieri, 2014).

The move signals a shift in direction regarding the special teams coordinator position, with McMahon having served more than a decade in the NFL and outgoing coach Brock Olivo being let go after just his first season in the role (fourth in the NFL).

In 2017, the Broncos ranked among the league’s bottom teams in field goal percentage (75 percent, 26th), net punting average (40.8, 27th), and punts inside the 20-yard line (24, 25th).
