Clough: Indecision at QB indicative of ‘failed Broncos 2017 season’

Dec 18, 2017, 8:24 PM

On Monday, more than three full days removed from the Denver Broncos road win over the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday, head coach Vance Joseph said the team has not landed on a starting quarterback for Sunday’s tilt against the Washington Redskins.

“It’s Monday for us, so we got back in the office this morning and just waiting to have the meetings with the offensive staff to figure out what’s best for us,” Joseph said.

Denver will sport a new signal-caller under center Sunday in our nation’s capital, as previous starter Trevor Siemian landed on injured reserve Friday after partially dislocating his non-throwing shoulder against the Colts.

But the indecision on who — once-future of the franchise Brock Osweiler and 2016 first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch — will line up for Denver on Sunday is indicative of a “failed Broncos 2017 season,” Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough said on Monday.

“My question is simply this: Shouldn’t the Broncos know who their starting quarterback is by now? Is there a team in the league, whether beset by injury or not, who doesn’t know who its quarterback is 15 weeks into the season?” Clough said.

Clough called the uncertainty surrounding the position both “paralysis by paranoia” and “paralysis by over-analysis.”

“The uncertainty continues out at Dove Valley. Absolutely nothing resolved on most any level,” Clough said. “The most common response, of course, from Vance Joseph seemed to be, ‘I don’t know. I’m not sure.’”

As to whether Joseph will have “major input” into the decision, Clough said he did not think the head coach would. That job, he said, would likely be that of general manager John Elway.

“I know the Broncos, throughout this season, as their top priority, seemed determined to communicate publically that John Elway is not much more than an innocent bystander when it comes to personnel decisions when, in fact, John Elway is the most powerful lead executive perhaps in major professional sports today,” Clough said. “For better and for worse.

“And I think we have seen both within John’s seven years at the helm. We’ve seen that as a good thing at times. We have seen that more recently as not such a good thing at all.”

Joseph said he and his staff would be discussing where both Osweiler and Lynch are and who’ll take the reins against the Redskins and “there are a lot of things that go into that decision.”
