Broncos, McCoy part ways, Musgrave promoted to offensive coordinator

Less than 12 hours removed from a sixth consecutive loss, the first such skid for the club since 1990, the Denver Broncos fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, the team announced via a release Monday morning.

McCoy will be replaced by quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave, who spent the past two seasons as the Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator, and offensive assistant Klint Kubiak will move into Musgrave’s former role.

“I have a responsibility to do what’s best for our football team. Although this wasn’t an easy decision, we needed to make this change. We have to play a more efficient brand of football offensively as we begin the final stretch of our season,” Vance Joseph said in a statement on Monday.

“Mike is an outstanding coach and a great person. He had a lot of opportunities this offseason, and he chose us. I have the utmost respect for Mike and wish him all the best in the future.”

McCoy’s dismissal is his second in the past year, as he was let go as coach of the San Diego Chargers in January. This had been his second stint as the Broncos play-caller, previously serving under head coaches Josh McDaniels and John Fox.

“I’m disappointed that things didn’t work out because this is a special organization and a great place to be,” McCoy said in a statement Monday. “I want to thank Vance for the opportunity he gave me and the entire organization from Mr. (Bowlen) all the way on down.

“I appreciate the hard work of our players and was proud to work with them along with the rest of our coaching staff. My family and I loved it here, and I’m very thankful for my time with the Denver Broncos.”

Musgrave, who also played for the Broncos during the 1995 and 1996 seasons, has previously held the offensive coordinator position with the Raiders (2015-’16), Minnesota Vikings (2011-’13), Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-’04), Carolina Panthers (2000), and Philadelphia Eagles (1998).

As Oakland’s play-caller last season, Musgrave led an offense that ranked sixth in total yards (5,973) and seventh in points (416) while developing Derek Carr into an MVP candidate.

“Bill is an experienced coordinator and play-caller in this league, and I’m confident he will help get our offense back on track,” Joseph said in his statement.

Musgrave will handle play-calling duties, Joseph said, as Kubiak, son of former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak, moves into the quarterbacks coach role.
