‘Schlereth & Evans’ unveil Broncos 1st quarter MVPs, disappointments

The Denver Broncos are 3-1 and heading into the bye in second place in the AFC West. So, it’s time for Mark Schlereth and Mike Evans to grade the club at the quarter-pole of the 2017 campaign.

Broncos offensive MVP

Stink: Trevor Siemian

“Siemessiah, my MVP. He’s on pace for a lot of touchdowns — 28 of them — and only 16 interceptions.”

Evans: C.J. Anderson

“I love the way C.J.’s running. I love his energy. I love the way he’s breaking tackles, bouncing off people. To me, if all the emphasis was we’ve got to run the football better, they are.”

Broncos defensive MVP

Stink: Domata Peko

“What did we say, one thing about this defense that needs to happen? They need to be better defending the run. Who’s been better than Domata Peko? And the answer’s nobody. The guy has been an absolute beast in the middle of the field.”

Evans: Derek Wolfe

“I think this guy, not only what he brings as a player but he may be the emotional heartbeat of that front seven.”

Biggest surprise

Stink: Jamaal Charles

“What a great story. A lot of people thought, ‘Ah, he ain’t going to make it.’ People said they dumped him for a reason in Kansas City. And, I’ve got to tell you, I’m pleasantly surprised. And I think his role is going to continue to increase.”

Evans: Adam Gotsis

“Think about where he was last year. A much controversial, much maligned second-round pick. He didn’t show much as he was coming back from the knee injury. But he’s healthy, he had to step up with the loss of some people along that front … Jared Crick going out. Adam Gotsis had to step up. And guess what, he has.”

Biggest disappointment

Stink: Menelik Watson

“A big, physical tone-setter, unless, of course, you’re pass protecting. Then the tone is not being set. … They need him to get a lot better out there at the right tackle position.”
