The Drive with Big Al & DMac LIVE in studio! Former Bears DL Dan Hampton joins the show to give The Drive a preview of the Broncos first preseason game of 2017 in Chicago. Dan says he’s willing to personally drive John Fox back to Denver, and wouldn’t be surprised if Jay Cutler had an outstanding season in Miami after eight years in the Windy City.
The Rockies get a big win on the road against the Indians thanks to Charlie Blackmon & Mark Reynolds, and DMac confirms with Sandy exactly when all these A.J. McCarron rumors started swirling, and gets Al’s reaction on the alleged inquiry about McCarron. The guys debate how much time it takes to get a new QB up to speed in Denver. Al says he would be upset if the Broncos did not pursue a QB if they were not happy with the ones they’ve got. DMac remembers covering the greats like Elway & Kelly, and Al wonders if Siemian and Lynch are even close to that caliber. DMac asks the question how many backup QBs in the league would be better in the Broncos system than Trevor Siemian is right now. Al says he’d rather see Matt Moore lead the Broncos than Trevor Siemian. Al says he would trade a 2nd rounder for Alex Smith right now, and John Elway calls the report about the Broncos pursuing A.J. McCarron fake news. Charlie Blackmon clicks his 27th HR of the year out of the park in a Rockies win over the Cleveland Indians, and DMac is thankful for the big rebound & Big Al mentions the Rockies response and rally as more important than a win could be. Ty Lawson moves on from the NBA to play in China, and Big Al says it’s sad to see what happened to Ty considering his talent & skill-set. Dan mentions why he’s critical of Jim McMahon, and what Jay Cutler might have been with good coaching. Dan says the ’84-’88 Bears wasted more talent than any other NFL team in history. Listen to the interview HERE!
The guys look back on former Broncos QBs and say we are blessed to have had the run on quarterbacks that we did. Hard Knocks is reviewed, and DMac says he is blown away by Jameis Winston’s leadership & professionalism. Al talks about how humble Jameis Winston has become, and asks DMac who he would have picked between Cam Newton & Von Miller back in 2011. DMac says you can’t underestimate the power of a franchise QB, and passing up on a HOF player in Von Miller must be done if Cam Newton is available. Al wonders if there are any current NFL QBs that could make it into the Pro Football HOF without a championship ring, and DMac remembers the 2012 Broncos. Big Al would put the 1996 Broncos against any NFL team, and the guys are still shocked the Ravens won the Super Bowl in ’12. DMac makes Al laugh when he calls the Patriots new rings stupid, and the guys debate if Peyton would still be a shoe-in for the HOF without his second ring. Also, DMac tells Al exactly what will happen with Trevor Siemian against all preseason opponents.
DMac talks college majors for the Broncos QBs, and a caller wonders why we’re paying Von Miller if we don’t want to win right now. DMac says the longer you keep Trevor Siemian, the more confusion you will cause. Big Al says if you read between the lines, Trevor Siemian has been No. 1 the whole time. Al highlights the matchup he’ll be keeping an eye on, and its Garett Bolles. Concern still rages about the holes in the inside linebacker position for the Broncos, and Big Al says if guys are getting knocked off the ball, you can forget about it. DMac has Charlie Blackmon & the Rockies trending up, and Big Al says there’s nothing like winning a big game & having the moment to yourself. DMac notes MLB nicknames being allowed on the backs of jerseys in late-August. Also, Big Al thinks it’s weird seeing golf shorts in the PGA.
