Clough: Broncos 2017 priority not making playoffs but finding QB

Jul 12, 2017, 5:51 PM

During John Elway’s tenure as an executive with the Denver Broncos, one mantra continues to circulate when discussing how he builds his rosters.

Elway’s desire is not to just “win,” but “win from now on.”

Vance Joseph, at his introductory press conference in January, said his new role as the head coach wouldn’t include a “rebuilt,” but instead he was there to “reboot” the franchise who failed to make the postseason in 2016 for the first time during the Elway era.

“It’s my job to find the small tweaks to make this team a winning team again,” Joseph said.

So, it’s not likely you’d find anyone on either Elway’s executive staff nor Joseph’s coaching staff who would claim the club has any other goal than bringing home a fourth Lombardi Trophy.

“You’ll never hear them say that,” 104.3 The Fan’s Clough said on Tuesday. “You’ll never hear that out of Elway or Matt Russell or anybody else over there in the front office. You’ll never hear it out of a single coach. You’ll never hear it out of a single player.”

But, Clough said, the “major priority” for Denver this season is indeed not earning a playoff berth.

“We know, and I suspect they know as well, that the priority this year is finding your quarterback for the future,” Clough said.

And despite the wishes of Demaryius Thomas — the star receiver said last week he’d like to know who’ll start under center for the Broncos by Week 2 of the preseason — Joseph said the 50-50 quarterback competition between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch starts in training camp.
