Status of unofficial Broncos workout unclear after conflicting reports

Just the next twist in whether or not a group of Denver Broncos players will meet for an unofficial passing camp this week in Los Angeles, 104.3 The Fan’s Brandon Stokley reports he’s hearing the session is still off.

The news comes as Broncos star pass catcher Emmanuel Sanders revealed during a youth sports camp Tuesday morning that he and his teammates would be working out in Los Angeles on Wednesday, and that fellow wideout Demaryius Thomas planned the trip.

During the “Stokley & Zach” program on Monday, Stokley said “reliable” sources had told him the passing camp would not be held. And Tuesday, Stokley said that, to his knowledge, third-year quarterback Trevor Siemian would not be at the camp should it take place on Wednesday.

Earlier this offseason, Siemian said the offensive skills players would be meeting up during the team’s break before training camp.

“We’ll do something (with the receivers),” Siemian said on June 13. “We were talking about that just now actually. I’m sure you guys will see an Instagram picture of it or something.”

The on-again-off-again camp comes amid a quarterback competition between Siemian and 2016 first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch.

Head coach Vance Joseph said during mandatory minicamp last month that OTAs served only as a time to learn and the real competition between Siemian and Lynch would start during training camp.

However, should Sanders, Thomas and company hold a passing camp without one of the quarterbacks, it could turn the competition into a “controversy,” said Chad Brown, filling in for Stokley alongside Zach Bye on Tuesday.

“Quarterback controversies divide teams. They divide locker rooms. There’s rarely any good that comes from that,” Brown said. “A quarterback competition, that’s legitimate. A quarterback controversy … if only one quarterback is going to be there, does he take it that the receivers, running backs, and tight ends who showed up (aren’t) on the other guy’s side?”

“… There’s not a lot of win that comes if it’s just one quarterback.”
