Rockies 1B Reynolds falls short in MLB All-Star Game Final Vote

Despite a career renaissance in Colorado, Rockies first baseman Mark Reynolds will fall just short of his first All-Star Game appearance.

Reynolds, one of five National League players in this season’s MLB All-Star Game Final Vote, could not keep up pace with Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner, who garnered a Final Vote record 20.8 million votes.

Turner leads the MLB in batting average (.384) — the fourth-highest at the All-Star break since 1969 — and on-base percentage (.473).

Entering the Final Vote with the highest average (.382) for any candidate in the competition’s history, Turner also outpaced 2016 NL MVP Kris Bryant, of the Chicago Cubs; 2017 Home Run Derby participant Justin Bour, of the Miami Marlins; and Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon.

Reynolds told 104.3 The Fan’s “The Drive” on Wednesday that it’d be a tall order for him to garner more votes than some of the bigger market players, but that he felt honored to even be considered for the Midsummer Classic.

“In 2009, I was a Final Vote candidate and lost that one. Normally, a lot of times these bigger market teams win out on those, but it’s just an honor to be considered and I appreciate all the support from the fans,” Reynolds said.

On the American League side of things, third baseman Mike Moustakas became just the second player to win the Final Vote, joining former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino (2009 and 2011).

Moustakas earned 15.6 votes, outpacing Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts, New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius, Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus, and Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Logan Morrison.

Though the first baseman didn’t make the squad, the Rockies will end up sending a franchise-record four players to Miami next week for the All-Star Game: center fielder Charlie Blackmon, third baseman Nolan Arenado, closer Greg Holland, and second baseman D.J. Lemahieu.

Blackmon will also participate in Monday’s Home Run Derby, set for 6 p.m. on ESPN.

The 2017 MLB All-Star Game takes place Tuesday starting at 5:30 p.m. on Fox.
