Quinn: Cut rookie Broncos QB Lynch slack, but Year 2 ‘leap’ expected

The difference between year one and year two in the NFL, former Denver Broncos quarterback Brady Quinn told 104.3 The Fan last week, is “dramatic.

“It’s completely different,” Quinn said of his own experience with the Cleveland Browns.

And though it may be a bit different for Paxton Lynch, or Trevor Siemian for that matter, moving into a new offense with a new coaching staff, just the experience of another year under their belts will have benefits, Quinn said.

“Just the speed of the game and everything else … You’re not trying to figure out the timing and the body language of your pass catchers. You’re not trying to really figure out the defenses, for the most part, and how they differ from what you experienced in college,” Quinn said.

So, cut Lynch some slack for a down rookie year.

In three games, all in relief of the starter Siemian, Lynch threw 83 passes for 49 completions (59.04 percent), two touchdowns, and one interception.

“A lot of slack,” Quinn said.

But it’s likely general manager John Elway, who selected Lynch in the first round of the 2016 draft, and the Broncos staff will expect more from the young gunslinger in year two.

“… He’s probably looking at him to take that big leap because now he’s been in an NFL system,” Quinn said of Lynch. “He knows what to expect. He’s got his process or his routine down, which is part of just kind of figuring out how to be a pro. He’s got all that stuff down now.”

Quinn said he expects to see Lynch gain more confidence, especially in aspects of the quarterback position in which he excels, like throwing deep.

“Something that really differentiates him from Trevor Siemian is his big arm and his ability to really make plays both throwing the football, and I think for his size he’s a good athlete too,” Quinn said.

“So, all those things that led John Elway to trade up in the first round and draft him I think should be on display this year in the offseason going into the preseason. And if he gets the starting job, you hope to see that come game day.”
