By the time the Denver Broncos take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football to open the 2017 campaign, John Elway said Wednesday evening that a contract extension between he and the club will be worked out.
Elway and organization are “continuing to work” on a new deal, the Denver general manager said before receiving the 2017 Community Enrichment Award at the Mizel Institute’s annual dinner held at the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum.
The comment comes a day after Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole reported that Broncos CEO Joe Ellis said of the possible extension, “We’ll get it done.”

Elway, whose contract expires at the end of this upcoming season, has been asked on several occasions about the progress of the deal during the last several months.
During a post-NFL Draft press conference late last month, Elway skirted a question about his extension, saying, “We’re not going to talk about that. We’re in the middle of this. We’re trying to get better as a football team. We’ll talk about that later. We’re going to be fine.”
At the NFL Combine in March, Elway said of the contract talks, “It’s going fine. It’s moving ahead. I don’t anticipate any problems.”
In any case, Elway, who was honored for his contributions to the Denver community during his 34 years since moving to the area, said Colorado will “always” be his home and he’s “not going anywhere.”
“As a kid, I moved around quite a bit. But, Colorado and Denver will always be my home,” Elway said.
