Schefter: ‘Good chance’ Broncos ink RB Charles if ‘knee checks out’

May 1, 2017, 3:44 PM

The Denver Broncos will reportedly let former Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles behind enemy lines Tuesday, as the free agent will meet with his former AFC West foe.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter first reported Charles would meet with the Broncos, and that the club is “enthused about it.”

Schefter, who joined “Stokley and Zach” on Monday, said it’s likely “both sides figure out a way to get this deal done’ should Charles’ knee check out medically.

“If it checks out, the knees are OK, and they can figure out a nice, comfortable landing spot financially — which I don’t think would be difficult to do at this point and time — then there’s no reason this deal shouldn’t get done,” Schefter said.

The Chiefs released Charles in February after nine seasons with the team. Schefter said the team did want to bring him back, but not at the salary he was projected to make coupled with his injury history.

Charles tore the ACL in his right leg in 2015, causing him to miss much of each season, and he only appeared in three games last season. He also tore his left ACL in Week 2 of the 2011 season.

“Kansas City would have had liked to keep him around, but not at the price he was scheduled to make,” Schefter said. “… They just weren’t going to pay that to a guy who has struggled to stay healthy.”

According to Spotrac.com, Charles was set to make upward of $6.187 million in base salary and bonuses in 2017.

In terms of what Charles could be seeking in free agency, Schefter pointed to Adrian Peterson’s recent deal with the New Orleans Saints, where he basically netted a one-year, $3 million deal with incentives.

“I don’t know that Jamaal will or won’t get that much,” Schefter said. “My guess is, just from the surface, it would be a one-year, $2.5 million deal or a two-year, $5 million deal with a lot of incentives built into where if Jamaal Charles performs like Jamaal Charles, he gets paid. And if he doesn’t, he doesn’t.”
